B3: Future Advantages of BIM/Revit - Husain Ibrahaim

Possible future advantages of Revit/BIM:
BIM world has increasingly wide spread throughout the world and gets the highest concern in the modern technology. When we want to predict the future of BIM to guess or expect possible advantages of it; we want to consider the weaknesses and what the designers/engineers need out of it. Nobody was even dreaming to have all of these massive drawings and sketches of large buildings like “Big Ben” in a digital form saved in a little flash drive! And now we can’t think of a building design with precise calculations that were done without using computers! Anyway, we are getting all of these advantages from BIM and saving lots of time and lots of papers. (BIM is very “green” technology). In my perspective, I think we can have many advantages out of BIM in the near future. I will organize my thoughts as follows:
-       BIM will be more in use by governments to help visualizing cities and real estates.
-       People are going to closely work with BIM with easy software in simple operations; this is including a design for renovation of a garage or new construction in backyards. The advantage is for BIM to be easy and flexible to be used by normal people. An example might be online ordering of new kitchen fully visualized and design.
-       The following advantage is a “must” to make BIM industry ideal: In Revit, for example, we are now able to design a building with all systems (structural, HVAC, etc) and with all furniture needed; basically the whole building. However, not only having solid visualization, but also having real time 3D video stimulation for possible loads applied, operating HVAC equipment, water paths and electrical wiring. What I mean is to have digital people in the building and evaluating how the systems behave in the building with people interactions.

Jonathan Plotkin:
I like your point of having Revit/BIM interact with the clients by showing more plans and drawings, however, I would like to add that we may expect Revit/BIM to have the ability to recommend a good structural system based on the clients building’s type, location, size and goal.

Santiago Uribe:
Yeah, I agree with the five bullet points you mentioned, especially, (2) and (5).
Because the major weakness with BIM currently is that it is not easy or fast. And we can have a sense of the development to make it easy and fast with the presence of SketchUp, although it is not considered as BIM, but related to it. Also, BIM is really reducing costs and time and will continue in more advanced way, indeed.

Kevin Saldivar:
I totally agree with you saying that BIM is going to have many advantages in constructions fields and building/design calculations. And I would like to add that it is also beneficial that possibly Revit/BIM will have the ability to have layouts for HAVC system based on building’s type, location, size and goal; so it can design the HVAC system by default and locate HVAC equipment.
