Our expected topic is HVAC, sensors, AI, database and
future. On this regard, I read an article talking about smartplug precisely
controls home lighting system. Unlike most smart-home control systems rely on a
central hub to manage all the devices, this one, called Zuli smartplug,
operates differently. It is based on a mesh network by using Bluetooth LE (low
energy) built in your phone to determine precise location. So when you enter a
darkened room, it turns lights on. As you leave, the lights will be turned off
automatically. The only thing you need is an electrical socked. As long as
appliances are plugged into this socket, they are under control. Compared to
existing smart-home control systems, the advantage of Zuli smartplug is you don’t
need to pull out your phone and launch an app. It is easier to flip a switch than
those procedures. If you have more than 50 appliances in your house, scroll
down the entire list to find the exact one is a pain. Even though you organize
them into groups. All these happen because of sensors.
Beyond above, Zuli is able to recognize different users and
control devices according to each user’s preference. Right now, the first
person enters the room rules the roost. However, a hierarchical system is
developing that will assign each user a priority with the ability to override
any lower-ranked user.
From my personal opinion, it is a revolutionary improvement,
but there is imperfection. First, most people is likely to leave phones on a
table for charging purpose while home. So the Zuli concept would never be able to enrich personal smart
home experience. Second point is, that even mesh network is not a new thing.
Although most other smart home solutions do need a central hub, they often do
form a mesh network with all the advantages. The hub needed is only the gateway
for you or your smart home control device to enter the network - with the
advantage of being able to access from anywhere on the world - as long as you
have access to the internet.
