For the AE-510 term project my group member and I have decided to integrate or current senior design project with BIM and analyzed the difference between the conventional process and BIM process. Before getting into the this integration, I would like to briefly introduce my senior design project known as SDP. For the SDP, my group aim to design a multi-proposed residential building located in Drexel park. Our design features a nine storages mixed use advanced L-shaped building which include residential floors, rentable spaces for vendors, library-like study area, food court, gym, and entertainment functions.

According to our project, make a integration with BIM would be very challenge because, our current project is modeled by Revit which is already a major function of BIM. However, our team members are very confident that we could use other BIM functions such as database management, clash detection system and building loading analysis to integrate our SDP.

We have decided to focus on developing and integrate our building’s loading analysis and construction scheduling using BIM. We are going to research the most widely used BIM loading analyzing system (different from Revit, because Revit can also analyzing the loading information in the building). By using this system we are aiming to develop a new structural model of the building with the proper loading code and find all the possible loading condition for this building. Furthermore, we also going to try to find number of beam, size of the beam and special loading area (heavy equipment, large loading demand spaces).

Additionally, we are going to try to make a database for the building and store the building major information in this database, here is a sample entry type for our database:

Equipment Type
Capacity
Serial No.
Location
Amount

We are going to do this for different entry type such as beam, pumping and other major components of the building. A ER diagram for this database will be done once all the entry types are ensured. We believed that for the modern structures, a clear and organized database would benefit not only the construction phase of the building, but for the future operating and maintaining as well. This database would also refer to the intelligent building, since it is using the modern technology to benefit the structure.

Finally, we are going to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of both or current design and the interrogated BIM design. A final report with the BIM model will be done. We also going to prepare for a final presentation is needed.

Comments:

1. to Angelina Castro: We are doing the similar thing by integrating our current senior design project with BIM program. I really like how you described your project clearly and indicated the possible challenges you and your group member may face. Additionally, I also agree that the time constraints is one of the biggest problem which I did not aware before reading your post. Good job!

2. To Justin Hileman: Justin, you are the same group with Angelina but she is not part of your senior design group. I could see you really understand what your doing for this and you also explained what the challenges will be for this project and how this refer to the intelligent building. In my point that one of another great challenge would be how we could get away with Revit and find some new BIM programs to integrate our current project.
