In this week, we are expected to write an outline for
our group project. Our project is related to the interaction
between intelligent buildings and green buildings. Before selecting this topic,
I have conducted some researches on sustainable building in senior seminar
lecture. The only thing I talked about in the technical paper just refers to why
the building is “green” and how to improve it with sustainable way. The
interesting thing is that the idea of green buildings can be combined with
intelligent buildings. The latter has more advanced and fresh construction
thoughts. In my idea, these two kinds of
buildings are a special house mechanism that provide residents healthy, easeful
and secure living environment. And in the meantime, they are able to put
resource or energy to rational use and reduce the negative impacts to
surrounding environment. As professor Mitchell said in the lecture, logically, we
cannot say the green buildings are equal to intelligent buildings, but in the
current society they indeed have the same purpose to decrease unnecessary energy
consumption. We find that today the new idea has been involved into the human’s
life since the intelligent building was proposed 20 years ago, which is
reflected in environment protection technique, energy-saving technique,
information technique, and management system. In our project, we will emphasize
how to improve the green building with intelligent techniques. Firstly,
lighting and HVAC system would be good examples that we will research in the
project, which include:
(1) Dimmable fluorescent lighting with sun blind control
(2) Lighting control with motion sense
(3) Radiant heating and cooling
(4) After hours control of lights and HVAC integrated with
security
(5) Monitoring of IAQ and contaminant
The Building automation system ( BAS)
not only can control what has been mentioned above, but also is able to control the security,
fire alarm, flood safety and anything that can be used electrically in the
building. For a resident, these techniques’ use will bring us benefit on saving
energy, increasing security, saving operating cost, and improving comfort. It
will be win-win if we combine green building and intelligent building.
Nowadays, a building can be built to be a green building by satisfying the
demand of LEED system in the design. It is no doubt that the technical update
to intelligent system would be an additional expense at the beginning and would
cost more on system maintenance, but relatively the payback would also be enormous.
In the end, we will compare the automatically controlled green building to
uncontrolled green building and see whether the building automation system can
bring more benefit to occupants.

Your project is talking about 3D-print that is used in building area. The material problem will always be a challenge for this project. I agree with what you are worry about that lots of blue collar would lose their job. Due to the development of techniques, no one could avoid the situation. In my idea, relying on current technology, the buildings constructed by 3D printer will consume more time and money.

You have a same topic as our group. It will be interesting if we have a chat about the topic each other. Our group try to research how to get the green building intelligentized. That is a good idea to point out the difference between green buildings and intelligent buildings. They are not same and have a different system, but the integration will benefit the energy saving and life-span.

I am glad that you can share your senior design project in this lecture. You mentioned that you would combine your original building model with BIM that could provide more convenient construction schedule, database management and clash detection system. In my idea, a database is necessary to be built for your building. It can help you to do more detailed analysis when you come back to check your model.
