Name: Timothy Perdue
Major: BS Architectural Engineering
Concentration: Structural Engineering
My background relevant to intelligent buildings is mainly based on my experience with different building information modeling software -- like Revit, Autodesk, SketchUp, etc. I have also had exposure to sensors as well as data networks. My internship this past summer had a contract with the local Fission Nuclear Reactors in New Jersey that generate electricity. They were responsible for setting up a number of sensors in the outlying areas surrounding the reactors as well as areas down stream from the reactors. These sensors all collected relevant data that can determine the acceptable levels of ionizing radiation in the area. By collecting and transmitting this data back to our offices, it can be filtered and manipulated to provide real time information on the levels of radiation at these key spots.
I expect that in this class, I will gain further exposure to the aforementioned topics -- probably applied to a different problem. The topics I have not had any outside experience in -- robotics and manufacturing systems -- I hope to come to a better understanding and learn of different applications for these systems.
My initial definition of an intelligent building is: a structure or building that has the ability to automatically control different inherent features such that it maximizes efficiency of each building system as well as the overall synergy of the systems.
